Dori Durbin grew up most of her life in a small town in Michigan. After earning a BA in English and a secondary teaching certification, Dori taught high and middle school English and Science classes for ten years. She obtained her Master of Arts degree in Human Services specializing in Schools & Communities.

After an illness, she switched gears and began her career as an certified personal trainer and fitness instructor. She also began to pursue her passion of being and artist and author. She currently still lives in Michigan with her amazingly smart and talented family: husband, son, daughter, three pleasantly pampered indoor cats, and her old Great Dane.

Dori teaches youth art and participates occasionally in art shows. She has additionally taken courses with Make Art that Sells (Lila Rogers), Story Teller Academy (Arree Chung), art classes, participates in a few of the gallery and special event shows the Little Blue Mushroom (Kristen Balouch). She hopes to continue to learn about writing and illustration for children– and owning many cats!

10 Fun Facts about Author/Illustrator Dori Durbin

She lives with her very fun and talented family: husband (Tom), son (Isaac), daughter Olivia), three indoor cats (Mia, Tux, and Nia), and a big harlequin Great Dane (Remi).
Most of her life she has lived in Michigan— in the very house she grew up in.
Growing up, she always wanted to be a veterinarian, a doctor, a writer, and an artist. So far she’s been a teacher, a fitness instructor, an author/illustrator, and a personal trainer.
One of her big-adult dreams has always been to write and illustrate children’s books. And now she has!
Her first memory of learning how to draw something specific was of a tree… an art lesson from her kindergarten teacher.
She adores cats! They are one of her favorite pets to draw/paint as well!
She cannot sit through meetings without a pen/pencil and paper to doodle on.
Her first memorized book was Disney’s “Bambi.”
Her favorite children’s book was the amazingly sweet, “When the Wind Blew” by Margaret Wise Brown.
One of her favorite memories was snuggling up and reading stories to her own kids at bedtime … she hopes one day she can read to her grandkids, too.

Mistakes . . . They are what we avoid.
They are what we deliberately redirect our kids from.

Why? Because mistakes can be painful, harmful, and downright embarrassing. No one wants others to see or notice their mistakes, right? It can physically and mentally hurt.

And yet . . . while we can also recall instances when those very mistakes have TRULY taught us. One painfully embarrassing mistake can teach us lessons that we remember and somehow-- unlike advice or direction from others-- those lessons stay LEARNED. As a matter of fact, after mistakes we tend to become like finely tuned scientists. We analyze, measure, and dissect those mistakes to truly understand WHY the mistakes happened and how never to do them again. We learn and move on . . . and are better for it.

But then we become parents and mistakes feel heavier and \"more serious\". I mean, personally, I feel more responsibility NOT have my kids make choices that -- as the parent, I can clearly see are wrong. I often find myself stopping mid-sentence after the words \"Be careful because . . .\" and \"Aren't you concerned about . . . \" because I know as a kid, honestly, I wasn't careful or concerned. But I also wasn't trying to be malicious or headstrong.

I just had to feel like I could make my own decision.

Making our own decisions is empowering. It’s no different with kids.

As a parent it IS OUR JOB to protect our kids. But it’s also our job to empower them.
So how about this: we inform and direct them instead? Parents can provide options (less is better the younger they are) that are acceptable to you and agreeable to them. Choice is empowerment; safety is key.

Mistakes will happen . . . but with a little guidance the mistakes can be smaller and handled together!

Emotions and Kids Writing

How is it that I'm now writing kids books?

Little known FACT #1: I've always loved READING them... especially the beautiful picture books.

FACT #2: At a book store, I am the adult who drifts off from the rest of the family and sits between the book rows nearly surrounded by piles of kids books. I'm also the same person who doesn't want to leave because there are soo many new books to look at. If I can't buy them all, then I want to memorize the art's richness and oogle over the gooery words. That person is totally me.

I NEVER thought I would be writing AND illustrating the books though! That reality is still hard to hold on to-- and its easy to feel intimidated by the awe-inspiring works of so many amazing authors and illustrators... the colors the line work, the rhythms...

YET... as a former kid, teacher, and current mom-- I KNOW how hard it is... simply to grow up. There are so many obstacles and issues for kids to navigate.

Being a parent's hard... being a kid is harder. I found myself wanting to write kids books because

I wanted and feel like I can make a difference.

I want kids to be able to identify, express, and (politely) stand up for their emotions.

I want kids and parents to feel empowered and not discouraged.

My books are my works-in-progess but also my \"connector\" gifts to kids and parents... a way to spend time together reading and sharing thoughts on serious subjects that are splashed with humor. Little Cat is me... my kids... any kid. Being a parent is hard... being a kid is harder. But, parents and kids united can make all the difference.
